Even though this is our "off season" we're busy at America SCORES Denver. Our Coach Across America members have been running winter sessions with several schools in both P.E. classes and during recess hours. Some of our poet-athletes are practicing their poems for the upcoming National Poetry SLAM! Auditions to be hosted by Starbucks in REI on February 1. Planning is in the works for a great spring season packed full of student-led service projects and soccer fun. We also look forward to special events...

Psalm One is wrapping up her tour

Recent news about our favorite rapper, Psalm One, who worked with Knapp Elementary SCORES participants in Denver this fall...
She has been busy in 2011! With a music release, an appearance on MTV's MADE, and the nationwide tour with The ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, Psalm has been going non-stop.
Help support her mission and her music by pledging to her Kickstarter project! There are a few days left to reach the goal of $8,000, and they need everyone's help! You can pledge even $1, and by doing so you'll be helping her upgrade her equipment, finish the last studio sessions for her next full-length commercial release, and more importantly you'll be helping her continue her youth mentoring program, Charm Lab!

Soccer Clinics Benefit SCORES

Over 60 kids participated in the "F-U-N holiday soccer clinic (ages u5-u9)" and "attacking soccer clinic (ages 10-12)" this week at Bill Roberts school. The curriculum focused on fun, attack-oriented games and offensive skills. All activities were co-developed and administered by experienced player-coaches including Bob Boyle, America SCORES Denver Board of Directors member and volunteer, and his brother Bill Boyle, a United States Soccer Federation 'A' licensed coach.

Our very own Executive Director and Coach Across America members were also part of the fun which had to be moved indoors to Bill Roberts school due to the Denver snow. We had an amazing group of soccer players both days, and thanks to the generous contributions of participants $1,000 is being donated to America SCORES Denver.

None of this would have been possible without the donated time and energy of the Boyle brothers--what a great gift of fitness and fun to the participants, and a much appreciated gift of money to continue the inspirational programming provided to SCORES' poet-athletes in 2012! Thanks to you all!

Great Fall Season, Denver!

This is the final week of programming in Denver and tonight's Poetry Slam was evidence of the hard work our poet-athletes put into their writing sessions!

America SCORES Denver's 12th Annual Poetry Slam! was held November 8th at Abraham Lincoln High School. Parents, guests and other schools' teams were entertained by students performing their original work in groups and individually. Attendees also enjoyed performances by SCORES's special guest Jose Guerrero, a DU student who also attended west Denver schools, is a leading local actor, and competes nationally as a slam poet. What a great night!

Thank you to all our wonderful soccer and writing coaches as well as the liaisons at each of the ten schools hosting America SCORES Denver! Without you we couldn't provide after-school programming to 320 students in DPS and we appreciate your dedication.

Poetry Slam! is around the corner and America SCORES kids are getting ready by adding details to their poetry, creating actions that emphasize their words, and practicing in front of peers and coaches.

Days 2 and 3 - Writing, Practicing, Recording

Thursday, October 13th Psalm One visited Knapp Elementary for a second day of writing and preparation for studio time on Monday the 17th. SCORES participants got out their pencils and put to paper their thoughts about what someone might say about them on their hundredth birthdays, positive behaviors that make them the "smart gang" and what they might tell an alien who came to their game on Friday.

Our talented guest then pulled examples from the writing to help create verses, including this one the poet-athletes memorized for their studio recording!

Monday afternoon the poets-turned-rappers were welcomed at Side 3 Studios by Psalm One and the magicians at the sound board who made them sound fabulous. Each student had a turn in front of the microphone, and in the studio to watch their headphone-wearing teammates. After the excitement everyone had a little time to play in the lounge.

We were all sad to say goodbye to our new friend but everyone is excited to hear how the song turns out! Thank you to ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, Side 3 Studios, Rhymesayers Entertainment, and of course to Psalm One for her time and talents!

...Okay, so we're no rappers, but the SCORES teams at Knapp might be!

On day 1 of our participation in the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES Knapp Elementary's SCORES teams got to know Psalm One through a lot of questions, picked their favorite beat, and began to write. Our poet-athletes wrote about what they each like and what they think makes Denver and/or their school cool.

Psalm One works through the students' writing to create her portion of the song after their session together, and today Knapp teams will create their section(s) of the collaboration. Friday is "game day" for America SCORES Denver so Psalm and the kids will record their hip hop creation Monday afternoon.

Denver teams had a great time at Fall Frenzy on September 24th! Thank you to the ladies of Regis Univeristy Women's Soccer who made such a successful Saturday event possible.

Poet-athletes have each had a home and away game so far, and are busy on writing days learning about haiku, acrostics and alliteration among other fun poetic devices. Stay tuned for more good stuff from Denver!

Colorado's last CSAP scores have been tabulated and Colorado stands relatively flat.

This year was the last for CSAP testing. Next year Colorado students will take the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP). The TCAP is an alternate testing system that will be used until the Colorado Department of Education develops the new testing system that will focus on supporting students who need to catch up to grade level.

The Kids Are All Right at Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market is no stranger to charitable endeavors. For its latest good deed, it's aiming to alleviate the growing problem of childhood obesity.
The organic grocer has formed the Whole Kids Foundation, which will help steer children's nutritional choices in partnership with schools and other organizations. Friday all 20 Denver SCORES teams will travel to Dick's Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids, for a round robin tournament. All 320 poet-athletes will enjoy an afternoon full of soccer, face painting, and a book giveaway.

Family and Friends are welcome to join the festivities and support their poet-athlete as they play up to 4 games on the turf fields outside of the stadium.

Munore Starts Spring Service Projects off with Passion!

Thursday morning as the rain clouds parted, a DPS school bus carrying 30 Munroe Elementary school students (ages 8-11) and two teachers arrived in City Park in Downtown Denver to volunteer with the Passion for Parks restoration project.

The students lent their assistance in planting a variety of plants throughout the East end of the Park and learned about the importance of keeping local Parks free of liter and vandalism.

During the spring season SCORES teams will conduct a variety of service learning projects in their communities.

As Denver Parks and Rec employees worked with Munroe students in City Park, over 500 volunteer Starbucks employees and customers spread throughout Denver working on similar restoration projects.

Starbucks and Denver Parks and Rec have been working together since 2007 to continue the Passions for Parks project. This year Starbucks also took the opportunity to present America SCORES Denver with a $30,000 grant.

First Jewelry Piece Submitted to Inspired Art

Originally a painter, Kathleen Gatliffe turned engineer and then metalsmith. Her preferred medium is enamel on copper. For this year’s Inspired Art Auction she has chosen to create a pendant inspired by “Fruit” by Kimberly C.

“I really enjoyed how vivid Kimberly’s poem evoked ripe fruit eaten with great joy … perhaps picked fresh from a tree. In addition, the poem I illustrated last year referenced wolves, and it seemed fitting to illustrate another wolfchild’s work. I etched enamel so it would have the soft look of a mango’s skin and to represent the bight fibrous fruit inside I stuffed in with wool roving. ”

I am a collector. I collect old things, found things, odd things, and creepy things along with pictures and ideas. I use all of these collections in my work. I like to indulge my visual side by creating captivating images, mostly animal that are both surrealistic and whimsical. These creatures tend to take on human qualities that juxtapose an idea against an image.

Denver based artist Barth Quenzer will lend his talents to Inspired Art for the second year in a row.

Besides being an active community member, Quenzer is a professional artist and a DPS art educator. Quenzer pursues his professional career at Guerilla Garden and encourages his DPS students to "exercise critical thinking and find creative solutions to conceptual issues."

Quenzer's artistic work varies in medium and size. Some of his work is so small it could fit in a book, other pieces have been as large as 20ft. by 20ft. It is exciting to think what he might develop for this year's inspired art event!

Sweetrocket Contributes to Inspired Art

Riva Sweetrocket is a contemporary pastel artist based in Denver. She has been drawing and painting since age three, her current work consists of large-scale soft pastel paintings on paper.

Riva has won many awards in the Denver area and has been featured in many venues including the Denver Botanic Gardens and Buell Theater.

This is Riva's first year participating in the Inspired Art Project. Above is a picture of her piece based on Viviana B's poem "Bubble Gum" which will be shown at this year's event courtesy of Plus Gallery.

Killer Bunnies, a Terrible Universe and Jane Rabadi

New inspired artist, Jane Rabadi, has chosen Jose T's poem "The Killer Bunnies in a Terrible Universe" for her inspiration.

Originally from Indiana Jane has earned art degrees from Sweet Briar College and Metropolitan State College of Denver. She currently work as a graphic designer and fine artist in Denver and has been involved in projects for many Denver organizations including: the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, and the Denver Art Museum.

Artist Tracy Tomko is Inspired to Join the Cause

Tomko attended the Art Institute of Colorado for Industrial Design, and has spent the past few years working as a Sculptor and Master Maker for companies such as Warner Bros., Porch Light Entertainment, Friends With You, McDonald's, Nike, Hollister, Guess, and many more. We are very excited to have her participate in the 2011 Inspired Art Event creating a piece based off Jacquelyn's poem "Poker Poetry." Inpired Artist Noami Foster Returns for a 2nd Year

Noami's body of art has brought healing, hope, love and restoration back into lives of many, crossing the boundaries of race, social status and economic background.

Why she chose to participate in Inspired Art?
My artwork is inspired by children and most of the time are children.
It impressed me to see an organization focused on our children and their own creative abilities. After reading some of the poems which were so heart felt I knew I had to be a part. Inspired Art gives our young people an opportunity to express themselves in their own way & allows artists to share with children how we see their work, it is a great collaboration.

How would you describe your experience from last year?
I was honored to be a part of last years Inspired Art. I know Inspired Art is an auction and you want your work to sell for a great cause but to be honest my desire was that the poet of my piece would love it the most.

Local artists are teaming up with SCORES to create some inspiring pieces. The artwork they create, based on SCORES poetry, will be sold on March 10th, 2011 at the annual Inspired Art Auction to help raise funds for the America SCORES Denver and Think 360 youth programs.
When asked "Why participate?" artist Angela Canada Hopkins responded,

I have experienced the power of healing through art first-hand. When I saw how Scores was working with youth through writing I wanted to support their mission. With my art I hope to portray the feelings of the particular poem that touched me. Fall Frenzy 2010 = Success!

The 11th annual Fall Frenzy went off without a hitch Saturday Oct. 2nd. The successful day was due in a large part to the help received by the Regis University Women's Soccer Program-thank you!

Thank you also to all players, coaches, fans, and staff who came to the round robin tournament and contributed to a great day.

SCORES Select Team starts the season 2-0

Congratulations to the SCORES Select boys team on their great start to the season. The Select team consists of graduates from the America SCORES Denver program that have committed to attend an extra practice every week and to compete in games on Saturdays and Sundays. These poet-athletes are competing in the Colorado Youth Soccer Southwest Quadrant division, a semi competitive league that includes teams from soccer clubs in the Denver area. The Select team is participating thanks to the support of the Colorado Fusion.

The SCORES Select team demonstrated skill, sportsmanship, and teamwork in their game Saturday, and we look forward to watching them throughout the rest of the season.

2010 Fall Season Begins!

Registration packets are being collected, practices are starting, coaches are planning and students are preparing for yet another great season of America SCORES Denver. The season started for a few schools last Wednesday, September 8th and things are running smoothly.

This fall SCORES will be adding Gust Elementary and CMSCMS Elementary schools. The addition of these schools will expand the program to 20 teams-10 girls and 10 boys.

Some exciting events for this fall include:

Copa de Kids 2010

In honor of the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup being held in South Africa this June, America SCORES Denver is partnering with the Colorado Fusion Soccer Club for the inaugural "Copa de Kids." On June 12th, 2010, SCORES and the Fusion will be co-hosting a full day youth soccer festival at Bill Roberts School.

Jamboree 2010 Highlights

Last Friday our 2010 Jamboree was held at Dick's Sporting Good's Park. In recognition of the 2010 FIFA World Cup being held in South Africa, the theme of this years Jamboree was "World Cup". Each team was assigned a different country to represent at the games, and in World Cup tradition, captains exchanged the flags of their country at the start of each match. One of our spectators, Randy Strong from iVB Network, was kind enough to capture a video of the night. I invite you to take a minute and check it out.

Students at Brown Visit the Franciscan Sisters Home

On Monday, May 17, students from Brown Elementary took a moment out of their busy schedules to pay a visit to the nearby Franciscan Sisters home for the elderly. Guided by their enthusiastic writing coaches Greg Toston and Amanda Swift, Brown's poet athletes decided they would give back to their community by raising money in order to purchase small pots and plants, inscribe their poetry on the pots, and personally deliver these wonderful gifts to tenants of the Franciscan Sisters home.

In a truly memorable afternoon, the students walked their poem-plants to the home and arrived just in time for dinner! For nearly 45 minutes they visited with about 30 members of the community, reading their poems, discussing their participation in SCORES and simply spreading joy! The energy in the room was contagious.

We are so proud of the students at Brown for coming up with this idea and putting it into action. Thanks to the Franciscan Sisters home for being such gracious hosts!

Graffiti Education at Cowell Elementary

On Tuesday, May 11 the Poet Athletes at Cowell Elementary school had the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the graffiti problem facing their neighborhood. Donna from Denver Partners Against Graffiti came by the school to give a presentation about graffiti in Denver, and discuss with the students what they can do to spread awareness and clean things up! We learned some interesting facts about graffiti:

The city of Denver alone spends over $1 million in graffiti clean up each year
We are all forced to pay for the graffiti problem because it comes out of our taxes
There is a difference between graffiti-vandalism and graffiti-art:

Vandalism is graffiti that takes place without permission and is illegal.

If you call 311, the Denver Information hotline, you can receive an application form and request a graffiti clean up crew to come out and remove graffiti from your home or property free of charge.

Newlon Helps Their Community

On Monday, May 4 the Boys and Girls Teams at Newlon Elementary spent the afternoon cleaning up their school as part of the Writing for the Community service project. With coaches Luis Munoz and Emily Fenske leading the charge, the students spent over an hour filling trash bags with all sorts of nasty stuff they found on the grass, on the playground, and even hidden in some of the bushes surrounding the school. The students' energy and efforts in cleaning up the school were truly amazing, and the grounds surrounding Newlon are certainly new and improved.

The students also plan on contributing to a local community garden by helping till the soil, put down seeds, and paint a fence!

Great work Newlon, thanks for all your efforts! And welcome back Coach Luis Munoz, you were certainly missed.

Sadly, the snow day that closed school the Wednesday before spring break also cancelled opening day for the Spring Season. So, in our opinion it was not worth it to play our first scheduled game.

The teams regrouped after spring break, however, and the last 2 Fridays we have seen some great soccer, big crowds and a festival atmosphere at each host school. Here are some great action shots from the first two weeks - thanks to all the coaches for sending these in!

This coming Friday, April 23 marks week 3 of the season, and we've got some very big games on tap:

In addition, both the boys and girls Select Team seasons are well underway, and we are playing so well! The girls had their best game of the season this past Friday in Highlands Ranch, losing a close game to Real Colorado, last year's league champions. All the girls on the team played great, and our opponents even named second half goalie Ruby Cortez the game's MVP for all the great stops she made. Way to go girls!

The boys played a bigger, older Boulder Force team. We worked so hard from start to finish on a field that seemed like it was a mile long, and every one of our players should be proud of his performance. It's not easy playing against 7th graders, and it's obvious that all the hard work in practice is paying off on the weekends.

America SCORES has been awarded the largest ever gift in our history, a $1.3 million grant from the Bestfoods Educational Foundation. The Bestfoods Educational Foundation, overseen by former Bestfoods executives, has provided gifts to non-profit educational causes for 10 years. America SCORES has had a long partnership with the Bestfoods Educational Foundation and we are so grateful that they have decided to award this grant to our organization.

America SCORES will use the gift to dramatically improve the delivery of our innovative after-school programs that combine soccer, poetry, and service learning to fight obesity, improve literacy, and increase motivation among youth in 200 public schools in 14 cities. Announcing the 2010 National Poetry Slam Participants

The competition was rough this year as 22 poet-athletes performed for a spot to participate in the National Poetry Slam in New York on April 19th. After careful consideration, we are proud to announce our two winners: Daeja R. from Cowell Elementary and Javier O. from Barnum Elementary. These two students will be representing SCORES Denver on an all expense paid trip to New York where they will perform their poems at the New York Stock Exchange. This will be a big fundraiser for the National SCORES organization, and a unique experience for these two incredible students.

America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts are coming together to bring poetry to life…

We would like to take this opportunity and announce that America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts are partnering to bring the Inspired Art Project to Denver! Modeled off of projects done in Bay Area, California and Chicago, Illinois, the Inspired Art Project enlists local artists to create and donate original works, drawing their inspiration from poetry written by 3rd to 5th grade students of America SCORES Denver’s after school program. All submitted artwork will be auctioned at the Inspired Art Show on April 29th, 2010 with proceeds going to benefit America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts.

Through this cycle of inspiration and influence, urban students are able to witness their creativity brought to life, artists are able to build connections with diverse communities around the city, and supporters of America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts are able to see the profound impact children’s words can have on others. The creative interpretation that local artists display in their work shows our youth the power and limitless impact of their words and voice.

Yesterday was definitely a nerve racking day for some of our SCORES students. 22 poets from four schools performed at Starbucks yesterday to compete for a spot in the national Poetry Slam scheduled to be held in New York on April 19th. On January 8th we will announce which boy and girl will have the honor of performing with SCORES students from across the U.S., but for now, here are a few of the poems that were presented yesterday afternoon. The "Off Season Debate"

Because our SCORES off-season is just beginning, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss a highly talked about issue of whether coaches and athletes benefit from an off-season. Responsible Sports, a program which supports volunteer youth coaches and parents, recently published an article on whether parents and coaches should insist on an off-season. They argue that both sides of the debate offer valuabe advice:

"On the side advocating for an off-season are those parents and coaches who point to examples of young athletes suffering burnout, or worse, injury, as a result of too much activity.

On the other side, the argument about avoiding specialization at an early age leads many of us to enroll our kids in many sports as they seek to “sample” what’s out there. And how can you sample and experience new sports, different teams with different teammates and coaches, if you don’t embrace the idea of playing in multiple sports seasons? Add to that, the arguments and very real data that supports everything from better health to better grades to better esteem when kids play sports. If we embrace all of these wonderful outcomes from a youth sports experience, shouldn’t we give our kids the maximum exposure to all of this “goodness”?"

Obviously, this is a debate that will not be soon be solved, but it is good food for thought.

Inside of me, I hear music. The kinds of instruments I hear inside of me are guitars, electric guitars, and other kinds of instruments. The kinds of music I like is hip hop, techno, and heavy metal. The music in me describes how I act, how I live, and how my feelings feel. But my song is not the only song. Sometimes I hear other people singing along with me. Inside of me I hear a strong beat. I hear my auntie that is in Mexico singing with me. Inside of me, my song is strong.

Highlights from 10th Annual Poetry Slam

Last night our SCORES students performed in front of a very full house at the Oriental Theatre. The night was a huge success thanks to the hard work that each poet and coach put into their performance. The energy in the room was incredible, and we would like to give a huge thanks to our volunteers, as well as our MC's, Matt Zambrano and Biko, for adding such enthusiasm to the stage. Sadly, the end of the fall season is upon us...but fear not because with the end of the season comes our much anticipated Poetry Slam! Our students and coaches have all been working vigorously on their poetry performances, and it should be a night to remember. The event will be held a week from today on Tuesday, November 10th at the Oriental Theatre (4335 W 44th Ave, Denver, CO, 80212). America SCORES Denver T-Shirts will be available at the event, so don't foret to plan accordingly. We hope to see you there.

Soccer Becomes More Than a Game

In celebration of our last game of the season last Friday, as well as this incredibly snowy fall break for DPS schools, I thought it was appropriate to share an inspiring article for a little light reading.

In light of our last Fall season game, half way across the world the Palestine women's soccer team was celebrating their first ever international match played at home. They were playing Jordan in front of a roaring croud of 10,000 people, three quarters women and a quarter men. Women were bussed in from all over the West Bank, where the stadium was located, and hundreds more were watching from neighboring rooftops. For a sport that has been reserved exclusively for male players, this was certainly a monumental event, one that turned into a "carnival of social liberation and national pride". The youngest player on the team was just 14 years old, and the team started out the match as extreme under-dogs. Palestine is ranked one of the lowest countries in the world, while Jordan is ranked 51st. However, the game ended symbolically in a 2-2 draw.

SCORES Kids vs. CSAP

It has been a couple of months since all Colorado students participated in the much anticipated CSAP evaluation test. However, we have yet to report on how the students at our schools performed, and how SCORES kids compared to their peers. Below is a breakdown of the overall results from our eight schools.

One of our dedicated coaches, Chris Webb, examined how SCORES kids from four schools compared to the rest of their classmates, and found that the test scores of SCORES students, as an average, were higher in all four schools than the test scores of the rest of the student population. The SCORES students scored an average of 24 points higher on the reading exam, and 14 points higher on the writing exam. Here are some statistics from Eagleton Elementary specifically:

EAGLETON ELEMENTARY READING:

- Not a single student in the (Eagleton) Denver SCORES program tested unsatisfactory. All of them were judged partially proficient, proficient, or advanced.
- 29 out of the 32 kids in (Eagleton) SCORES improved their reading scores.
- 8 of the 32 kids moved from unsatisfactory to partially proficient/proficient.
- Average reading test score for those involved in (Eagleton) SCORES was 18 out of a possible 31 points (58%)
- Average reading test score for the rest of the school was 12 out of a possible 31 points (38%)
- Students who were in (Eagleton) SCORES showed a 20% improvement in their reading test scores vs. the rest of the school.

EAGLETON ELEMENTARY WRITING:

- 31 out of 32 kids in (Eagleton) SCORES were tested partially proficient/proficient in their writing. Only 1 student tested unsatisfactory.
- 24 out of 32 kids in (Eagleton) SCORES improved their writing scores.
- 8 of the 32 kids moved from unsatisfactory to partially proficient/proficient.
- Average writing test score for those involved in (Eagleton) SCORES was 13 out of a possible 21 points (62%)
- Average writing test score for the rest of the school was 9 out of a possible 21 points (43%)
- Students who were in (Eagleton) SCORES showed a 19% improvement in their writing test scores vs. the rest of the school.

Congrats to all of our SCORES students for the great improvement, and keep up the hard work!

The Moment You Have All Been Waiting For....

With the sylistic and creative efforts of the America SCORES Denver staff, we have designed a one-of-a-kind SCORES t-shirt that is soon to be the must have item for your closet. Below is a template of the design. As you can see, the front of the shirt has our logo on it (very stylish), and the back has the phrase "futbol + poesia = alegria"...or "soccer + poetry = happiness" (very catchy). We are printing them both on white shirts and navy...so take your pick.

T-shirts will be sold next Friday at our last game day, as well as during our Poetry Slam on November 10. We will also have link up soon to buy them online, so be on the look out.

Larimer Arts Festival

We are proud to announce the upcoming of the second annual Larimer Sidewalk Arts Festival taking place on Saturday October 17th from 9AM - 4PM. Now, you may be thinking...I thought SCORES was a soccer and writing program...and you're right. But we want to encourage all types of creative expression and would like to invite our poet-athletes to take part in this exciting opportunity.

The festival is an open-air celebration of arts created by young people sponsored in part by Flobots.org. The event is welcome to all artists ages 12-21, but the program directors at flobots.org have actually given us special permission to let our SCORES kids participate. All artists are invited to show and sell their art with all proceeds going to benefit each individual artist. It should be a fun filled afternoon with local bands and DJ's scheduled throughout the day, so even if you don't have art to showcase, it will be a great way to spend your Saturday.

Yesterday, my Name was Soccer

We have finally gotten to the point in the season where our students are beginning to come up with some very original and creative writing. Today, I wanted to share with you some poems from the boy's team at Eagleton Elementary. Special thanks to Chris, their coach, for sharing these with us.

Today, my name is Grant Wood.

I like ice cream.

I play soccer all day.

Yesterday, my name was soccer.

I like macaroni and cheese.

I read books.

Tomorrow, my name will be backpack.
I lick the floor.
I eat crayons.

Defense is the key to the game.

Effort is what we’re looking for.

No slacking off in the game.

Fall Frenzy 2009 = Success!

Last Saturday was definitely a fun-filled and successful day for our 250 poet-athletes, their coaches, and of course, their families. After a sunny morning full of soccer games, book give-aways, and face painting, the field was all smiles as people were leaving to go home.

We would like to give a very special thanks to the Regis University Girls Soccer team for helping out with the event by setting up the fields, reffing each game, and for their artistic talent at the face painting booth. We could not have put on this event without their help.

Will you Spread the Word?

With the world of social networking growing at unremarkable rates, it is time that America SCORES Denver jumps on the bandwagon. Trends in 2009 show that social networking sites and blogs are more popular and more widely used than personal email, accounting for nearly 10% of all internet time. In fact, research has shown that if the number of people using facebook made up the population of a country, it would be the eighth most populated in the world, ahead of Japan, Russia, and Nigeria (HERE for more information).

So, you may be asking, what is America SCORES Denver going to do to stay connected to this growing cyber world? Well, I'll tell you; we are going to start a wave of activism in the Facebook country by creating a cause named......SUPPORT URBAN POET ATHLETES. In order for this wave of activism to start, we need your help by joining and supporting our cause, and also by recruiting your family and friends to do the same.

Steps to Join:

(1) CLICK HERE to be taken directly to our cause page. If you have a facebook page, you will need to sign in with your user name and password. Then, simply select "join now". During the process you will get to a step which asks you to invite friends to join; don't simply skip over this step, we need you to spread the word.

(2) You can also search for our cause by going to applications feature on the bottom of your facebook page, selecting causes, and then searching for "Support Urban Poet Athletes".

(3) If you are not a facebook user, and thus not a part of the Facebook Country...do not worry. I am sure that somebody you know has an account and can help you recruit.

The Swine Flu is No Match for SCORES

The SCORES season is well underway. We had a great game day on Friday, and a special apperance from Futbol Kingdom at the Munroe vs. Cheltenham match up made the day extra exciting.

With the weather changing, and germs slowly filling the classroom, now is a very important time to keep our poet athletes healthy and energized. Swine flu scares have been filling the newsrooms, and "washing your hands" commercials have been running rampant around Denver. But do not fear, for there are a few myths about Swine Flu which I am about to disclose to you so that you can know the truth and can keep your families and athletes healthy...(for more information please visit HERE)

Myth #1: Swine flu is much worse than seasonal flu - FALSE
   So far, the swine flu hasn't shown signs of being more powerful than the seasonal flu, but it is slightly more contagious. Part of this reason is that most people don't have any immunity to swine flu, unlike other season flu strains to which we may have been exposed to before.

Myth #2: Young, healthy people shouldn't worry about catching the Swine Flu - FALSE
   Unlike seasonal flu which has the most serious health effects in people older than 65, 75% of serious Swine Flu cases and 60% of deaths have occured in people younger than 49. In fact, 1/3 of adults over 60 have a pre-existing immunity to the H1N1 strain which may be due to a similar strain being present during their childhood.

Myth #3: The flu vaccine can cause the flu - FALSE
    Flu shots are made with dead strains of the virus, which means they can't replicate. While you can get swelling and achiness at the injection site and a low-grade fever, this is just how some peoples' bodies respond to the vaccine. They are not symptoms of the flu, only a minor side effect of getting the shot.

Myth #4: It's better to get the flu than get vaccinated - FALSE
    The problem with the flu is that there is no way to tell how a person will respond to the infection. The risk of side effects from the flu vaccine is very low, and right now the risk of contracting the flu is very high.

Myth #5: If you get the Swine Flu, go to the ER - FALSE
    If you get a mild case of the Swine Flu, the best thing to do is stay home and treat the symptoms (take a fever/pain reducer, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and get plenty of rest and fluids). A trip to the ER will only end up exposing more people to the infection. However if you start having complications such as difficulty breathing, pain in chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, or severe vomiting, you should see your doctor right away.

Myth #6: You should go back to work once you feel better - FALSE
    Experts urge Swine Flu sufferers to stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever goes away without using fever-reducing meds.

And there you have it...stay healthy out there!
